Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young

Das folgende, habe ich heute auf Radio1 bei der Arbeit in einer deutschen Fassung gehört. Und wollte es Euch nicht vorenthalten... Zuerst stand es ohne meine Zusätze da... Aber wie das so beim Bloggen ist, immer schön was dazuschreiben, sonst würde ja ja auch ein einfacher Link zum Orginal genügen... Und egal, was ich dazu geschrieben habe... Die Tips sind Gold wert.

Wear sunscreen.
If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.
Ich trage selten Sonnenschutz. Habe ich zur Zeit auch nicht nötig, weil ich eh den ganzen Tag im Büro hängen muss.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.
Hat sie recht. Guter Rat. Bei mir ist es ca. Halbzeit und ich finde mich richtig toll auf alten Fotos. Ich hätt mich genommen (und tue es immer noch, ähäm [Männergehüstel]).

Don't worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum.
The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4 p.m. on some idle Tuesday.
Es war schon schwer genug, sich keine Sorgen über die Gegenwart zu machen... wie sollte ich dann auch noch meine Sorgen über die Zukunft in den Griff kriegen?

Waaa, ja genau das sollte ich tun. Ich geh viel zu sanft mit mir um. Eier, wir brauchen Eier [zit. Herr Kahn].

Don't be reckless with other people's hearts. Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss.
Selten, aber sollte ich öfters. Meine Zähne stehen sehr eng zusammen, seitdem meine Weissheitszähne draussen sind (draussen heisst in diesem Zusammenhang, dass ich sie noch habe, unddass sie nun in meinem Mund sichtbar sind, nicht dass ich sie mir, obwohl es mir geraten wurde, habe rausnehmen lassen, nur, dass ihr Bescheid wisst - Was für ein unnützer Satz.).

Don't waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself.
Das ist ganz schwer. Wenn man sich selbst meist nicht auslebt, um andere nicht zu beschränken und dann sieht, dass diejenigen am meisten Erfolg und Bewunderung erlangen, die um fast jeden Preis durchsetzen, was sie wollen, dann ist das schwer. Neid bezüglich Kinder reicher Eltern kann ich auch nicht ausschliessen - obwohl ich auch ohne Geld eine ganz gute Partie geworden bin und reiche Leute es ja auch nicht einfach haben (ja klar, armes kleines Bonzenschwein).

Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.
Selektive Wahrnehmung...Praktiziere ich schon Jahrzehnte lang, nur leider eher andersherum. Leute, die mich loben, kann ich nicht immer glauben... Muss ich dran arbeiten.

Keep your old love letters.
Hab ich noch. Obwohl es eher Crisis-letters sind. Na ja, ein/zwei ganz nette waren, glaube ich, dabei... Gleich mal nachschauen... Wo ist die alte Kiste noch gleich?

Throw away your old bank statements.
Stimmt. Niemand schmeisst seine alten Bankauszüge weg. Niemand. Ich hab sogar noch meine alten Telefonrechnungen aufgehoben... Es kann ja sein, dass da nochmal was kommt. Guter Punkt. Die Ordner mit Telefonrechnungen wurden seit den Online-Rechnungen allerdings nicht mehr aufgefüllt... Merken: Wegschmeissen.

Stretch.
Wobei ich gehört habe, dass übermäßiges oder unsachgemäßes Dehnen auch kontraproduktiv sein kann. Ich habe es nicht nur gehört, sondern auch erfahren. Ich konnte mal eine halbe Woche nur unter Schmerzen gehen.

Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't.
Ich weiss eigentlich, was ich will, weiss nur noch nicht, wie ich das erreichen soll.
Viel Geld, viele Freunde, viele Familie, viele bunte Smarties.

Get plenty of calcium.
Um was damit zu machen?

Be kind to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone.
Ich jogge ja jährlich in der sog. warmen Jahreszeit. Am Ende des Jahres, höre ich immer wieder neue Töne aus meinen Knien... Ich glaube, der Rat kommt für mich zu spät.

Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else's.
Man kann sich nie genug selbst loben... Ist doch wenigsten aus vollem Herzen und nicht irgendeine Floskel oder Heuchelei.

Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.
Ich würde ja so gerne, aber sie lassen mich nicht. Mach, dass sie mich lassen. Sofort.

Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.

Read the directions, even if you don't follow them.
Neeeee, nieeee, was son richtiger Kerl ist, der liest einfach keine Bedienungsanleitung. Es sei denn man hat es wirklich, wirklich eilig.

Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly.
I am ugly, thank you, Playboy is not responsible for that. Aber abgesehen davon lese ich eh nur noch vom Blatt, wenn es Drafts, Infomaterialen oder Bücher sind.

Get to know your parents. You never know when they'll be gone for good.
Zum Teil zu spät, dieser Rat, leider. Und ich habe sehr darunter gelitten, echt.

Be nice to your siblings. They're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.
Maik sowieso. My sister rules big time.

Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.
Friends come? Schön wär's. Bekannte kommen und gehen.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. Travel.
okay, what ever. Hinterhutzingen soll auch sehr schön sein.

Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.
Den Punkt habe ich schon erreicht und akzeptiert.

Respect your elders.

Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out.
Hab es wahrgenommen und werde mal sehen, was ich daraus machen kann... lass mal sehen... nee, ist ja schon so... oke.

Don't mess too much with your hair or by the time you're 40 it will look 85.
Hab ich es nicht gesagt? Keinen Kundenservice mehr anrufen, niemals - naja, ausser vielleicht die Auskunft.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it.

Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.
Und plötzlich erkenne ich den Grund, warum ich Leuten gerne Ihr Leben erkläre... Ich bin nostalgisch.

But trust me on the sunscreen.
Wenn ich mal wieder aus dem Rhythmus: Aufstehen, Arbeiten, schlafen = keine direkte Sonneneinstrahlung herauskomme, dann denke ich darüber nach. Mary, ich will Dich heiraten. So eine weise Frau.
